英文文法觀念｜不定冠詞

學生對於不定冠詞a/an的用法感覺都熟，就是我們中文說的「一個」、「一位」、「一台」、等，但是實際上要怎麼判斷什麼時候要用a或an，你知道嗎？

不定冠詞a/an

以往學過的簡單分類是：
a：後面接的名詞是子音開頭
an：後面接的名詞是母音開頭

例如：
There is a book on the table. 桌子上有一本書。
There is an egg in the fridge. 冰箱裡有一顆蛋。

但是，其實並不是只看是否後面接的名詞是否是子音還是母音字母開頭，而是要聽聽看後面接的名詞是否以「子音或母音發音開頭」！

什麼意思呢？我們來看看下面的幾個例子。

She is a university student. 她是一位大學生。
雖然大學university是以我們一般認知的母音字母u開頭，但是因為u的發音為/yoo/，第一個發出的音為y並非母音，因此要用a。

The test will begin in an hour. 考試會在一小時後開始。
雖然小時hour是子音字母開頭，但是因為h不發音，第一個發出的音是母音o開頭，因此要用an。

1. The little girl wants to be ( a / an ) unicorn for Halloween.

2. There is ( a / an ) box of cookies on the counter.

3. He fell and needs to get (a / an ) X-ray.

4. She needs to get ( a / an ) uniform before starting her shift.

5. To take ( a / an ) MRT, you need to first purchase a ticket or have an Easy Pass.

6. (A / An ) HSR ticket is more expensive than a regular train ticket.

詳解與中文翻譯

1. The little girl wants to be a unicorn for Halloween.
這個小女孩想要在萬聖節打扮成一隻獨角獸。
雖然unicorn的拼法是母音字母開頭，但是因為發音是子音y開頭，要用a。

2. There is a box of cookies on the counter.
櫃台上有一盒餅乾。
因為後面接的名詞是子音發音開頭的，因此用a。

3. He fell and needs to get an X-ray.
他跌倒並需要照一次X-光。
雖然X-ray的拼法是由子音字母開頭的，但是因為發音是母音e開頭，要用an。

4. She needs to get a uniform before starting her shift.
她需要在她的工作時段開始之前，購買好一套制服。
雖然uniform的拼法是母音字母開頭，但是因為發音是子音y開頭，要用a。

5. To take an MRT, you need to first purchase a ticket or have an Easy Pass.
雖然MRT的拼法是由子音字母開頭的，但是因為發音是母音e開頭，要用an。
